Frances Davis is a black cleaning lady, trudging through her day-to-day existence in New York City, with no handouts and plenty of complaints.  She has little patience for anyone, especially if they are trying to help or insinuate themselves in her life.

In a mysterious turn of events, she is unraveled and reconstituted in the form of a white man.  Frances quickly comes to embrace the privileges of her new life, only to find shame and self loathing are just as present in her new physical form.
